Applied Linguistics is a large field, and only a small portion of the field can be examined in a quarter. This course will focus on what research in second language acquisition (SLA) tells us about language teaching and learning. We will discuss different methodologies of foreign language teaching, briefly tracing the history of methodologies used in the U.S., with special emphasis on the ones currently enjoying widespread use. We will discuss practical applications of SLA theories and methodologies to languages taught by class participants.
